Many parents are concerned, even including health institutions which have the same belief - that there is a relationship between the child's behavior with his diet.
But recently, the Center for Science in the Public Interest released a report-US in reverse. This report is the result of several studies submitted by food manufacturers, healthcare professionals, including the US government.
These studies say there is no connection between the behavior of children with their daily diet.
By food manufacturers, this means; no relation between sugar with a hyperactive child's behavior as long as it is believed by many people.
However, there are many parents who are not convinced with the results of the report. Indeed, further research is still needed to prove the truth of the claims of each party.
However, there are several plausible reasons other than sugar, as the cause of the child's temperament irritability and hyperactivity.
From which sugar causes hyperactivity theory come from?
The idea that food has an effect on the behavior grew popular in 1973 when an allergy specialist Benjamin Feingold, MD, published a book diet Feingold.
He advocated salicylate-free diet, food coloring and artificial flavoring to cope with hyperactive children. Although ala Feingold diet does not mention sugar in particular, he suggested that parents avoid additives flavor additives. Afterwards, refined sugar or table sugar immediately enter the parental control list.
Then a 1978 study published in the journal Food and Cosmetic Toxicology found that hyperactive children who underwent glucose tolerance test was known to have a high sugar content and are advised to reduce intake of sugar.
However, this study does not explain significantly, how sugar can cause children to be hyperactive.
Is known about sugar
In the last 10 years, several studies have investigated the effect of sugar on children's behavior. Here are the aspects investigated in the study:
-Number Of sugar consumed by respondents in the study
- The effect of sugar compared to a placebo effect
- Children, parents and researchers who are not interested do not know where the children are given what kind of diet (this method is called double-blind study, in order to avoid bias towards research).
Analysis of all the studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, 22 November 1995.
The researchers concluded, the sugar in the diet does not affect children's behavior. However, the authors also do not rule, there is little the effects of sugar on a small number of children.
Hope can affect perception
Although the above results have been disseminated, there are many parents still believe that sugar does make their children become hyperactive.
Some researchers say, this may be due to the perception that already exist in the brain of parents, affect how you interpret what you see.
A study published in August 1994 by the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology showed that parents who believe a child's behavior is influenced by sugar, are more likely to see their children become hyperactive, when they had been led to believe the boy had just sweet drink.
As a parent, your observations of the child, is very important. Any concerns you have regarding the diet of children, should be explored carefully and discussed with the pediatrician. There are many factors that influence the incidence of hyperactivity in children, among which are:
- Temperament
- Emotional disturbances
- Learning disorders (such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
- Sleep problems

If after knowing this, you still see that sugar is the cause children to become hyperactive, the first step you should do is consult a doctor.
Extreme approach, such as eliminating entire food you think is the enemy, it could cause negative effects are greater than the benefits you expect.
After examining the child's complete physical and studied the medical history, may pediatrician will refer you to consult a nutritionist or allergist or may also be a child psychologist, to get an overall picture of what causes your child becomes overly active spirit.
